Social Studies

The Administration, Board of Trustees, and stakeholders at Liberty Academy Charter School (LACS) believe that all students can and should learn about citizen participation in government. Citizen knowledge of how government works is essential in forming the nation’s democracy and sustaining our way of life. Learning about social studies promotes loyalty and love of country and prepares students to participate intelligently in public affairs. Component disciplines of social studies foster in students the knowledge and skills needed to make sense of current political and social issues. Component disciplines of social studies foster in students the knowledge and skills needed to make sense of current political and social issues. By studying history, geography, American government and politics and other nations, students can learn to contribute to national, state and local decision-making. At LACS we intend to follow the guidelines of he NJ CCCS and provide learning opportunities for our students that will impart an understanding of the American constitutional system, and active awareness and commitment to the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, a tolerance for those with whom they disagree, and an understanding of the world beyond the borders of the United States. In addition, we believe that the development of critical thinking skills should be part of the social studies experience in the classroom. We have designed a social studies curriculum which emphasizes the awareness of the importance of understanding how our government and political processes work. Where developmentally appropriate, social studies skills will be taught with a correlation to reading, math and science skills. LACS teachers have resources available to demonstrate social studies principles and to allow students the opportunity for hands-on experiences that will help make the principles “real”.
